There is a trade-off. The platform has become more layered, with different reasoning levels, research modes, tools, plugins, and usage limits. New users can stay with basic chat, but getting the most from ChatGPT now means knowing which mode fits the task.

ChatGPT Work is one of the clearest signs that the product is moving beyond conversational assistance. OpenAI describes Work as an agent for longer tasks that can research and analyze information, work across connected apps and files, and create finished materials such as documents, spreadsheets, presentations, reports, and sites.

The distinction matters. Standard chat is better when you want to work turn by turn. Work is aimed at jobs with several stages where the AI can carry more of the process. That can save effort, but important work still needs human review, especially when facts, calculations, external actions, or business decisions are involved.

The best first test is not a trivia question. That reveals more about the platform’s value than basic prompting does.
