Character.AI is an AI entertainment platform built around conversations with fictional and user-created characters. Instead of opening a blank assistant and deciding what role it should play each time, you choose an existing Character or create one with its own personality, background, speaking style, rules, greeting, avatar, and voice.

By 2026, Character.AI has expanded well beyond text roleplay. Long conversations have historically been difficult for character-based AI because important details eventually disappear from context.

Character.AI expanded its memory system in 2026 with Story Memory, Facts, and Memory Usage, giving users more control over details that should persist across long chats. Its updated memory system can track characteristics such as appearance, quirks, and other information relevant to maintaining character and persona consistency.

The current model lineup also includes PipSqueak 2, designed to improve in-character consistency, memory, and writing quality, alongside DeepSqueak, which Character.AI describes as its most capable chat model.

Lorebook is one of Character.AI’s more interesting additions for serious roleplayers and creators.

A Lorebook stores information about a fictional world, including characters, locations, factions, objects, events, and rules. Entries have keywords, so relevant lore can be supplied to the Character when those topics appear in conversation.

This solves a common roleplay problem: repeatedly reminding a Character who a side character is or how the fictional world works.

For writers developing larger settings, this can be more valuable than adding another paragraph to a character description.

Character.AI also supports two-way Character Calls and custom voices. Users can select voices from a library or create a voice from an audio sample, while call transcripts are retained as text conversations.

Visual storytelling has also become a larger part of the platform. Features such as Imagine, Stories, and newer interactive formats extend characters beyond continuous text chat.
